Malabar (Malayalam: മലബാര്‍) is a region of southern India, lying between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea.The name is thought to be derived from the Malayalam word Mala (Hill) and Persian word Bar (Kingdom) or from the Turkic words Mal (rich) and Bar (port). This part of India was originally a part of the British East India company controlled Madras State,when it was designated as Malabar District . It included the northern half of the state of Kerala and some coastal regions of present day Karnataka. The majority of Kerala's Muslim population known as Mappila live in this area. The name is sometimes extended to the entire southwestern coast of the peninsula, called the Malabar Coast. Malabar is also used by ecologists to refer to the tropical moist forests of southwestern India (present day Kerala).
മലബാര്‍
ബ്രിട്ടീഷ്‌ ഭരണകാലത്തും തുടര്‍ന്ന് സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിനുശേഷവും മദിരാശി സംസ്ഥാനത്തിലെ ഒരു ജില്ലയാണ് മലബാര്‍ ജില്ല. കോഴിക്കോട് നഗരമായിരുന്നു തലസ്ഥാനം. ഇന്നത്തെ കേരള സംസ്ഥാനത്തിലെ കണ്ണൂര്‍, കോഴിക്കോട്, വയനാട്‌, മലപ്പുറം, പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലകള്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്നതായിരുന്നു ഈ ജില്ല. ഇതു കൂടാതെ ലക്ഷദ്വീപും ബ്രിട്ടീഷ്‌ കൊച്ചിയും മലബാര്‍ ജില്ലയുടെ ഭാഗങ്ങളായിരുന്നു. കേരള സംസ്ഥാന രൂപീകരണത്തിനു ശേഷം 1957-ല്‍ മലബാര്‍ ജില്ലയെ കണ്ണൂര്‍, കോഴിക്കോട്, പാലക്കാട് എന്നീ ജില്ലകളായി വിഭജിച്ചു.
